Windows Vista/Server 2008 - Service Pack 2

It's the day we've all been waiting for...well the day all the nerds responsible for their respective IT departments that actually installed Vista have been waiting for. Service Pack 2 has been released for not only Vista but Server 2008 as well.

What's cool about this? Well for most people, nothing. If you want the update immediately, run a Windows Update and it will fetch the download. Expect to see improved system performance, increased stability, and less crashing (if yours happens to crash a lot.)

What's cool about this for the nerds? It's Service Pack 2, you, me, and the rest of the IT community have been waiting since 'nam for this thing. Best of all its a single installation file for Vista/2k8, run the installer and it will intelligently apply the correct version for the OS it's running on. It's not like it was confusing before, but this certainly saves some time. 32 or 64 bit download links, brilliant.

Service Packs, for those unfamiliar can be thought of as the grand puma of Windows Updates. You get notifications to install small updates here and there, fix small problems, but when Service Packs are released. Microsoft typically addresses much greater issues about their operating system. These updates address core functionality, but can also be such an infinite amount of tiny updates it's best to just package them as a single installer.

Windows 7
Oh what's that? You installed Windows 7? Sorry, no updates for you, but when you revert back to Vista within less than a year you'll have a better OS to revert back to! I've already been asked "Should I switch back to Vista?" the answer is "Depends." If you are happy with Windows Seven and the way it's running, keep on enjoying yourself. But if your experience has been sub par, or you are simply just ready to make the switch back, it's a great time to do it. You essentially have a brand new operating system to go.
