Well this is my first blog..... EVER! All comments and criticism are gladly welcome. I will definitely introduce myself at a later time..... but for now, let's talk about Google.
I am a little late on this one but last week google added direct push email to its Google Sync service which already pushes Google Calendar and Gmail contacts to the iPhone and Windows Mobile devices. I, being a huge iPhone supporter and proud owner, am very happy with this addition. Although, I am losing faith in Google's service with both its reliability and application in the enterprise world. Yesterday, Google suffered another outage, this one only affecting a small percentage of users. Google has a good thing going for them and also have a good idea on how to do this cloud thing. But my two questions are, will Google Push technology break into the enterprise and desktop world and will these outages continue, and cripple Google's credibility?
I love the fact that my calendar appointments, my contacts, and now my gmail is set up on my iphone using Exchange protocol. But it really annoys me that my desktop is limited to IMAP for e-mail, google sync tool for my calendar appointments in Outlook, and no known option for contacts. Even with Google Apps for the workplace, I still have a hard time believing my email, calendar and contacts cannot directly push to my outlook.
Time will tell how this plays out and honestly I am excited to see how it does. Being a technology professional, I would love to see Google really enter into the enterprise world, but they need to get moving. As Adam showed in his last blog, Microsoft keeps getting better and better, and have definitely helped their reputation. But if anyone, including Google and Apple, are going to gain market share at the enterprise level, they have a lot of ground to cover.
For those interested, here is a link to Google's official Gmail blog talking about this addition: http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2009/09/push-gmail-for-iphone-and-windows.html.
